Our review

So often when travelling overseas, people tend to believe that it’s in the busiest restaurants of the largest cities that they’ll find the best meals. They book into a well-known restaurant they have learned about in all the right travel books and websites. They stay at the most popular hotel with the coolest pictures on its website and, more often than not, they leave feeling deflated.

Others take a different approach. They drive a bit further and look for the quieter restaurants with a lovely atmosphere, the ones that the locals go to: the ones that are not making the headlines, that not many people know about, and where they find the best food.

Such a find is the Taynuilt Hotel and restaurant. It is not in Oban, it is 12 miles out of town, and it is there that you will find the food you travelled to Oban to enjoy. The owner goes to great lengths to find the best, freshest and most exciting ingredients available. There is a big different between sourcing the best among the easiest items available, and sourcing the best. For the latter, you need to go that extra mile.

Taynuilt Hotel found new life in the hands of its current owners. Previously a small village pub with rooms, today it offers high-quality, carefully and individually designed bedrooms, and an excellent restaurant showcasing not only Scotland’s best produce but the best in hearty gourmet meals.

Beautiful beds, quality linen and comfortable mattresses create the perfect homely feeling for a good night sleep while a number of personalised touches such as jars of tea and coffee, samples of local gin, Scottish whisky, “choccies” and DVDs give you a warm feeling inside and make you want to stay just a little bit longer.

Thanks to the management’s passion towards wine and drinks, the hotel has an exciting drinks menu. Those who think Scotland only produces good whisky will be delighted to sample some of Scotland’s best beers and gins. The owner is passionate about showcasing the best of Scotland, so much so that they even have a successful wines and spirits shop. If you liked what you drank, you can take a few bottles home with you  or discover others you haven’t tried before.

Owner, head chef and DYI expert extraordinaire John McNulty devotes all his time to making sure that his guests can have a special homely experience at his hotel. Every detail has been carefully considered and he is constantly introducing further improvements.
