Our review

Arriving at Kylesku Hotel fills one with a real sense of discovery. Located off the North Coast 500 Route in rural Sutherland, it can be found on the old slipway that once upon a time was used by the ferry to take travellers across the loch. Although now replaced by a bridge, there’s still very good reason for travellers to turn off the main road — a spectacular hotel.

The 11 well-appointed bedrooms, some with loch views, offer contemporary and comfortable standards and two of the rooms have wonderful balconies that provide unparalleled views of the glen and, as a result, some incredible sunrise vistas.

Although it specialises in seafood, the restaurant (which is lent a cosy feel by its wood-burning stove) nevertheless also offers an excellent menu that covers a wide range of choices — including local venison, the shellfish for which the hotel is famous (most of it is caught within a few hundred meters of the hotel) and probably one of the best fish and chips you’ll ever have When Sonia and Tanja, the owners, talk about local provenance – they really do mean it.

The bar opens out onto a superb decked area with seating where you can take in the views and enjoy a glass of wine — you might even get to see a seal or two playing on the rocks opposite. If you do, the hotel has binoculars for you to use.

There is a great deal to do in the local area and the hotel team will take a lot of time talking you through the activities on offer. Spending time in this part of Scotland is all about the location’s history, people and the outstanding beauty of this amazing part of Sutherland.

However, if you just want to take it easy then read a book or play one of the available board games in the lounge. With fabulous views and an open fire is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy one of the 50 whiskies on offer from the bar.  One last thing: should one of your relatives have visited Kylesku in the past, they have visitor books going back to 1944!
