Our review

Blythswood is a large Georgian townhouse hotel in a quiet Glaswegian square, within an easy walk of the city’s major sights, where a dedicated team of local staff deliver a luxury experience from the outset. There's an award-winning spa and the lively restaurant serves well-prepared, tasty dishes using Scottish ingredients. When Blythswood Square was constructed in the Georgian era it was meant to be the new centre of the city. Although that never came to pass, it is very close to the shops on Buchanan Street and only a short walk from all the major Glasgow sights. The square itself is very peaceful, with a recently created garden in the centre and attractive old style railings around the perimeter.

The building has a spacious and glamorous feel befitting of its days as the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, during the golden age of motoring. Although the chosen decoration today is more contemporary, subtle reminders — such as classical pillars and gilded RSAC insignia — give a nod to the building’s role in a bygone age.

All 100 rooms are similarly decorated in a luxurious style, with Harris tweed used for the curtains and oversized pendant lampshades. What’s more, all are replete with original features and enjoy the use of opulent marble bathrooms. The best rooms are the airy suites that boast original panelling and cornice, while the Penthouse Suite must be experienced at least once.

The Salon on the first floor takes you back to days gone by; a time when only the finest of visitors to Glasgow shared this space after a day of motoring. This grand space is complimented by a fine cocktail and wine selection, sure to keep guests and non-residents with the finest of tastes satisfied.

The restaurant offering at Blythswood Square is both impressive and popular with the locals, while the extremely attentive staff at dinner make all aspects of the experience an absolute pleasure. Breakfast is a cut above the norm, with an imaginative buffet that includes Serrano ham on the bone.

The Blythswood Hotel has established itself so well as one of the true five-star offerings in the Scottish Hotel scene that it is hard to remember it’s only been around for ten years — and that says it all.
